Beard Care FAQs: Everything You’ve Wanted to Ask (But Maybe Didn’t)
Growing a beard is one thing. Maintaining a beard? That’s a whole other story. Whether you're a seasoned beard veteran or just stepping into the world of whiskers, chances are you’ve got a few questions.
We’ve heard them all at BEARDED., so we’ve rounded up some of our beard care FAQs to help you get the most out of your facial fuzz.
How often should I wash my beard?
Not as often as your hair - and definitely not with regular shampoo. Washing your beard 2–3 times a week is the sweet spot for most. Daily washing can strip away natural oils, leaving your beard dry and brittle.
Instead, opt for a premium wash specifically designed for beards – it will gently cleanse your facial hair without stripping moisture. If your beard's exposed to sweat, food, or adventure, a rinse with warm water in between wash days is all you need.
Beard oil, balm, or butter—what’s the difference?
Great question - and one we get a lot.
- Beard Oil is a lightweight hydrator that nourishes the skin underneath and softens your beard. It’s perfect for daily use, day or night.
- Beard Balm adds hydration with a bit of hold - ideal for shaping shorter beards. Again, perfect for daily use, morning is best.
- Beard Butter is like a leave-in conditioner - rich, hydrating, and perfect for medium to long beards. BEARDED. Beard Butter is wax-free and whipped to perfection. Can be used daily, and if used in conjunction with an oil or balm you can simply add this to your nighttime routine.
Think of these essential products kinda like mates with different strengths. You can use one, or layer them for a truly elite beard routine.
Why is my beard itchy?
Ah, the dreaded beard itch. It’s usually a sign of dry skin underneath or new growth irritating your face.
In this situation, hydration is key.
Use a quality beard oil or beard butter daily, and brush your beard to distribute natural oils and exfoliate the skin. That itch will be gone faster than you can say “barbershop.”
What causes beard dandruff (aka beardruff)?
Beardruff is just like scalp dandruff, but on your face. It’s often caused by dry skin, product buildup, or poor exfoliation.
Combat it with our gentle BEARDED. Beard Wash, daily oil or butter, and regular brushing. A boar bristle brush helps lift flakes, stimulate the skin, and keep your beard looking fresh.
Does beard oil help with beard growth?
In a manner of speaking - but let’s clear something up. Beard oil doesn’t magically grow hair, but it does create the ideal conditions for growth by keeping the skin healthy and the follicles happy.
A well-cared-for beard is less likely to break, thin out, or feel patchy.
How do I choose the right scent?
Everyone is different - just because your mate likes one scent doesn’t mean you will. BEARDED. Has 5 scents available plus an unscented option.
Not sure where to start? Try our beard oil samples so you can see which one fits your vibe best before committing to a full size.
Do I really need to brush my beard?
Yes! Brushing helps with even product distribution, skin exfoliation, and keeping your beard tidy. Use a boar bristle brush for best results - it gets deep without being harsh.
What’s a good routine for low-maintenance guys?
Here’s a simple, no-fuss routine:
- Wash 2 to 3x per week
- Apply oil or balm each morning
- Apply beard butter each night
- Brush through daily and walk out the door like the legend you are.
