Effective solutions and remedies to avoid the dreaded beardruff

Effective solutions and remedies to avoid the dreaded beardruff

Winter is nearly upon us! The brisk cold air can wreak havoc on our facial fuzz and the skin beneath, often leading to the dreaded itchiness of beardruff.

Never fear though, we’re here to share our bearded wisdom and some tips to get you through the coming months.

Beard Dandruff

Beard dandruff occurs when the skin beneath your beard becomes dry and flaky.  This can be made worse by the harsh winter weather, stripping moisture from both your skin and hair.

When you retreat indoors for some much-needed warmth, the indoor heating can also further contribute to the problem. To combat beard dandruff, it's essential to focus on both hydration and proper grooming techniques.

Hydration is Key

The foundation of preventing beard dandruff is keeping your skin and beard hydrated. Here are some essential tips to maintain moisture:

  1. Drink Plenty of Water: It’s an obvious one but, hydration starts from within. Make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day to keep your skin and hair healthy.
  2. Use a Humidifier: Indoor heating can dry out the air in your home, leading to dry skin. Using a humidifier helps maintain optimal humidity levels, which can prevent your skin from becoming too dry.
  3. Moisturize regularly: Apply a good quality beard oil or beard balm daily. These products are formulated to provide the necessary moisture and nutrients to both your beard and the skin underneath.
  4. Keep things cool in the shower: Hot water can strip your skin and beard of natural oils, leading to dryness and dandruff. Opt for lukewarm water when washing your face and beard. Additionally, limit the duration of your showers to avoid prolonged exposure to hot water.

After showering, gently pat your beard dry with a towel instead of rubbing it vigorously, which can further irritate the skin.

Hone your grooming routine

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – maintaining a solid beard routine works wonders for your beard and skin. If you’re new on your beard journey, here are some pointers about what an effective routine will include:

  • Wash Your Beard: Clean your beard 2-3 times a week, with a gentle beard shampoo. Washing your beard helps remove dirt, dead skin cells, and excess oil that can contribute to dandruff.
  • Avoid using regular hair shampoo – it’s been formaulated with a different ph level than is needed for your facial hair which can strip the natural oils from your beard hair and skin beneath. Instead, we’d recommend our award-winning Beard Wash. Our beard wash is a clean, natural and non-toxic product that protects the skin and hydrates the hair.
  • Exfoliate: Use a beard brush or a soft-bristle brush to exfoliate the skin beneath your beard. This helps remove dead skin cells and promotes healthy blood circulation, which can prevent flakiness.
  • Our Beard Brush is made with all natural boar’s bristles, this beard brush will help stimulate the natural oils beneath your beard, and will also assist in spreading beard oils or balms throughout your beard hair.
  • Condition: After washing, apply our Beard Conditioner or a leave-in conditioner to keep your beard soft and manageable. Conditioning helps to lock in moisture and provides an extra layer of protection against the cold weather.
  • Trim regularly: Regular trimming helps keep your beard neat and prevents split ends, which can contribute to dryness and dandruff.
  • Use quality scissors or a trimmer to maintain your desired beard length. Or if you prefer a more professional touch, check out our Barber Recommendations for beardsmen approved barbers around New Zealand.

Taking a little extra care during winter, can keep your beard looking sharp and help prevent the dreaded itchiness of beardruff throughout the cold season.

Until next time, stay warm and happy bearding!
