Taming the Beast: 5 Tips for Managing Your Curly Beard

Taming the Beast: 5 Tips for Managing Your Curly Beard

Curly beards have character. They’re bold, textured, and packed with personality. But they also have a habit of doing whatever the hell they want. One minute you're a Viking king, the next you're a tumbleweed.

Here’s how to take charge of those curls and keep your beard looking sharp, not scruffy.

1. Moisture is Non-Negotiable

If your beard feels like wire and looks like a bird’s nest, it’s probably thirsty.

Use a quality beard wash and conditioner (something specifically made for beards – like our BEARDED. Shampoo & Conditioner) two to three times a week, tops. Then lock in the moisture with a quality beard oil.

Hydration helps soften curls, reduce frizz, and keeps the itch away. Your face will thank you.

2. Train It, Don’t Fight It

You wouldn’t leave your hair sticking out in all directions - so don’t let your beard run wild either.

A daily brush or comb session helps train those curls to grow in the right direction. Use our BEARDED. Beard Comb or BEARDED. Beard Brush (depending on how thick and long your beard is) and go with the grain. This not only detangles but helps distribute oils evenly for a healthier, shinier beard.

3. Don’t Skip the Balm

Beard oil handles hydration, but beard balm steps up with control - together they are the ideal styling duo.

If you’re rocking curls that like to go rogue, beard balm gives them a gentle hold without turning your face into a wax museum. It’s especially handy for medium to long beards that start to puff out or get wiry at the edges.

To apply the balm, work a small amount between your fingers, warm it up, and run it through your beard from root to tip.

Looking for the perfect beard styling combo? Our BEARDED. Beard Oil & Balm Combo is the way to go - available in all 5 of our signature scents, plus an unscented option!

4. Regular trimming makes for a well-behaved beard

This might sting a little - but yes, you still need to trim your beard, even if you’re growing it out (especially if it’s curly).

Curly beards don’t grow down, they grow out. And when they do, things can start to look unruly fast. A quick trim keeps split ends at bay and helps your beard maintain a clean shape - without losing length.

Hit up a good barber who knows how to work with beards. Our BEARDED. Bros from around the country have done the hard yards and helped us put together a list of Barbershop Recommendations from across New Zealand.

Or for the braver ones among us (or those with steady hands) invest in a decent pair of scissors, and carefully trim and tidy for yourself.

5. Play the Long Game

Real talk - managing a curly beard isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s a daily commitment. The good news? The more consistent you are, the easier it gets.

Our advice is to stay patient, trust the process, and your beard will reward you with a glorious, thick mane that turns heads for all the right reasons.

A Final Word

Managing a curly beard isn’t about controlling it - it’s about working with it. With the right care (and a little BEARDED. confidence), you’ll have a beard that demands attention for all the right reasons.
