The Art of Growing a Moustache
Big, small, bushy, thin, long or short, here at BEARDED. we believe a well styled moustache is not just for Movember - they are timeless!
If you’re in the market for a well styled moustache to proudly adorn your top lip but are struggling to move past the wispy lip-fluff stage, read on - we have a list of useful tips that will have you perfecting your mo-game before you know it.
Take care of your skin
Before we even touch on the hair on your face, we need to talk about your skin - the foundation to any great facial fuzz!
Hair uses moisture from the skin to hydrate itself which will in turn dry your skin out if you don’t keep your skin hydrated leading to the dreaded beard itch and dandruff. To combat this, use a moisturiser to soothe and soften your skin, and wash your face regularly to prevent any build up of dirt or oil that will clog up your hair follicles
We’d recommend Zorilla’s Renewal Moisturiser - it’s packed with essential fatty acids and vitamin rich ingredients that keep the skin soft, clean and fresh and reduces the sign of aging too.
Or if you’re looking for a more all-in-one solution, you can’t go wrong with Lambert’s Luscious’ 3-in-1 Hair, Beard & Body butters. Perfect for providing maximum moisturisation all year round from the hot summer months to the dry winter, leaving hair and skin feeling like a million bucks.
Keep it Oiled
If you have read many of our other BEARDED. Grooming Blogs, you’ll have seen us mention one product time and time again; Beard Oil.
Despite the name it is not just for beards. We truly believe it is one of THE facial hair staples that every bearded (or moustachioed) bloke should have in their routines.
Regular application of beard oil to your upper lip is key to keeping both the skin and moustache hair nourished as it grows.
Our very own BEARDED. Beard Oil range is handmade right here in Kapiti, New Zealand using quality, natural ingredients. Our blend of premium oils have been carefully cultivated to provide maximum hydration to your beard hair and skin beneath. PLUS! They come in 5 different scents that will leave you smelling amazing as well as keeping your moustache feeling fresh and soft. If you can’t decide which scent to choose, you can get a few in sample size to try out before you commit to a full size bottle.
Trim and Tidy
Once the moustache has started to grow in, it’s time to keep it trim and tidy to promote healthy growth and to stop the tickle of stray, overhanging hairs on your lip.
If you’re making your moustache the hero, and shaving the rest of your face, shave as you always do. For a shave upgrade, we recommend our BEARDED. Double Edge Safety Razor. It’s rust resistant and includes 5 stainless steel double edge blades. Not convinced about making the switch? Check out our blog article to find out more: 6 reasons to switch to a double edge safety razor.
To trim your moustache, you can use beard trimming scissors to carefully trim, and level out stray hairs and keep the edge of your moustache neat and shaped as you like it. Beardbrand Beard Trimming Scissors are perfect for moustache grooming as well as beards. They feature Japanese-made steel blades with a hardness rating of 55–56, giving you years of precision moustache trimming.
When it comes to styling your moustache, consider a good quality moustache wax. Work a small amount at a time into your moustache and gently shape it into your desired style. Our BEARDED. Moustache Wax is designed for a strong hold to ensure your moustache stays sharp all day long. Disclaimer – our mo wax has been designed as a super hold wax, so it will require work to make it malleable - but it’s worth it!
As long as you follow these simple steps and get a solid grooming routine under your belt, you’ll be well on your way to sporting an epic moustache.
Until next time - happy growing moustache bros!
