Autumn Beard Care: Don't let the cold catch you out

Autumn Beard Care: Don't let the cold catch you out

It’s almost time to break out the hoodies, beanies, and jackets cooler weather is on its way.

The shift from summer to autumn brings plenty of change. Warm days turn cool, green leaves fall to brown, and beach walks get swapped for crunching through leaves underfoot.

While autumn is a favourite season for many, it can be a tough one for your beard and skin. The drop in temperature, cold winds (especially for us Wellingtonians), increased time indoors around heaters, and lower humidity all work together to dry out your hair, beard, and skin.

Get your routine right now, and you’ll keep that beard you worked so hard to grow over summer looking healthy, comfortable, and sharp.

Here’s what we recommend.

Tip 1: Wash Less, Condition More

Washing your beard and hair too often strips away the natural oils that keep it healthy — and those oils are especially important during the cooler, drier months.

Conditioning does the opposite. It adds moisture, strengthens the hair, and makes your beard easier to manage.

Every beard is different, but as a general guide:

  • Condition your beard 3–4 times per week
  • Wash it just once or twice per week

We stock a solid range of beard washes and conditioners to suit different beard types. If you’re unsure what will work best for you, get in touch  we’re always happy to help you find the right fit.

Tip 2: Don’t Forget Your Skin

Beard care doesn’t stop at the beard.

The skin underneath and the areas of your face exposed to the elements need just as much attention. Cold weather can throw your skin out of balance, making it drier, oilier, or both. Cue itchiness, flakes, and beardruff.

Keeping your skin clean and exfoliated helps prevent buildup, clogged pores, and irritation.

A Tooletries Face Scrubber is a great option. It’s long‑lasting, antibacterial, and made from 100% silicone, designed to conform to your face while gently removing dead and dry skin. Regular use helps keep pores clear, reduce flakes, and prevent breakouts.

Tooletries also offer head, body, and back scrubbers ideal for getting that deeper clean and exfoliation your skin needs year‑round.

For best results, pair exfoliation with a natural cleanser. Lambert’s Luscious Hair & Body Bar is a 3‑in‑1 shampoo, conditioner, and body bar that works just as well on your skin as it does your hair. Finished with fresh pine and earthy thyme, it smells like autumn too.

Tip 3: Moisturise (Before It’s Too Late)

When it comes to dryness, prevention is everything.

Apply moisturiser before you head out each morning, and reapply during the day if your skin or beard starts feeling tight or itchy.

For your face, a quality moisturiser will do the job. For your beard, you’ve got a few solid options each with its own benefits.

Beard Oil - a year‑round essential. Beard oil hydrates both the beard and the skin underneath, reduces itch and beardruff, and keeps your beard smelling damn good.

Beard Balm - Think of balm as beard oil’s best mate. It offers hydration with added hold, helping shape and control your beard while giving it a thicker, more polished appearance.

Beard Butter - Softer than balm and wax‑free, beard butter melts straight into your hands. It’s easy to apply and leaves your beard feeling soft, smooth, and deeply nourished.

Whether you use one or all three, each helps lock moisture into your beard and skin exactly what you need as the weather cools down.

Final Tip: Ease Off the Hot Water

We get it. Cold mornings make a hot shower tempting.

But hot water strips your skin and beard of natural oils, undoing all the good work from your wash, conditioner, and moisturising routine.

Turn the kettle on for a hot cuppa, grab a warm robe, and dial the shower back to lukewarm. It won’t be easy at first but your beard will thank you for it.
