Beard Myths Debunked: Fact vs. Fiction

Beard Myths Debunked: Fact vs. Fiction

Beards have been around for centuries, adorning the faces of kings, warriors, philosophers, and even our modern-day hipsters. Yet, despite their long history, beards are shrouded in myths and misconceptions.

It’s time to clear the air and set the record straight. So grab yourself a hot drink, sit back, and let's debunk some of these common beard myths.

Myth 1: Beards Are Dirty and Unhygienic

Fact: Beards can be just as clean as the hair on your head.

This myth likely stems from a few isolated cases of unkempt beards, but it’s far from the truth. A well-maintained beard is clean and hygienic, in some cases more so than some folks with only head hair!

Regular washing, conditioning, and combing keep a beard in tip-top shape. Just like the hair on your scalp, beards need proper care. If you’re worried about cleanliness, and want to adopt a solid routine check out our blog on Beard Wash - FAQs.

Myth 2: Beards Are Itchy and Uncomfortable

Fact: Unhealthy beards can be itchy & uncomfortable - and with the right attention, the itchiness will be temporary.

Anyone who’s grown a beard knows about the dreaded beard itch.

But here’s the kicker: it’s temporary! The itchiness often occurs during the early stages of beard growth when new hair breaks through the skin. Once the beard grows longer and you start using quality beard oils and beard balms, the itchiness subsides.

Proper care is key to having a comfortable and itch-free beard. Check out our blog on 5 Tips For an Itchy Beard if you want to scratch that itch before it drives you crazy.

Myth 3: Beards Make You Look Older

Fact: Beards can add character and a distinguished look, not necessarily age.

While it’s true that a beard can change your appearance, it doesn’t necessarily make you look older. The style, length, and how well you beard is cared for, all plays a part here.

A well-groomed beard can add a touch of maturity and sophistication, making you look more distinguished rather than aged. Think of it as a natural way to enhance your look and express your personality.

If you're a bit self-conscious about greys growing through in your facial hair, check out the Volt Instant Beard Colour - it works wonders! Personally, we say embrace, embrace, embrace! But each to their own.

Myth 4: Beards Grow Faster if You Shave Them

Fact: Shaving does not affect the growth rate or thickness of your beard.

This old wives' tale has been around forever. The truth is, shaving has no impact on how fast or thick your beard grows. Hair growth is determined by genetics, hormones and your overall health. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface of the skin, which can make it feel coarser as it grows back, but it doesn’t change the growth rate or density. So, if you’re aiming for a full, luscious beard, patience is your best friend.

In saying that, keeping your beard well trimmed can promote healthy beard growth by eliminating split ends and breakage. Investing in a good quality set of Beard Trimming Scissors will help to keep your beard in check. Myth 5: Only Certain People Can Grow Full Beards

Fact: Almost everyone can grow a beard with time and patience.

While genetics play a crucial role in beard growth, most men can grow a beard if they give it enough time.

Some may have patchy growth initially, but many find that their beard fills in over time. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to growing a beard, and each person's journey is unique.

Embrace your beard-growing experience, and don’t get discouraged by initial patchiness or slow growth. And as always, if you need some extra guidance, our grooming blog is packed full of tips, or reach out to us at BEARDED. We’re here to point you in the right direction

Myth 6: Beards Are High Maintenance

Fact: Beards require care, but not as much as you might think.

While beards do need some attention, it’s not as time-consuming as some might believe. Basic beard maintenance involves regular washing, trimming, and moisturising. Once you get into a routine, taking care of your beard becomes second nature.

Plus, the effort you put into maintaining your beard pays off with a great-looking, healthy beard that turns heads.

There are many more myths surrounding our beloved beards but we hope we’ve helped debunk a few to keep in your back pocket for any beard naysayers that cross your path.

Until next time, keep on bearding!
