Benefits of Having a Beard
Having a beard needs no justification other than the fact that it makes you look and feel great. It is however handy to have a few solid reasons up your sleeve for any anti-beard people you may come across.
With that in mind, we have compiled a list of some of the many benefits of having a beard.
Protects you from the sun in Summer (and year round).
While sunscreen should always be used as your first means of protection, you might be interested to know that your beard can provide extra protection from the sun.
According to researchers from the University of Southern Queensland, it can also reduce your risk of skin damage caused by blocking up to 95% harmful UV rays.
Adds extra warmth in winter
You’ve got a beanie for your head (or a thick head of hair), a scarf for your neck, gloves for your hands.
What about your face? Our poor clean-shaven mates need to resort to snoods or polo-necks, bowing their heads against the harsh, cold winter winds. Meanwhile the bearded brothers hold our heads up high, allowing our magnificent beards to provide a natural layer of warmth.
A beard also prevents heat loss from your face, creating a natural buffer against the colder weather and helping to prevent moisture loss and skin irritation caused by lower temperatures.
Helps with allergies and alleviates itchy skin.
Regularly shaving for an extended period of time can result in irritation from micro-cuts and razor burn. This can then lead to skin irritation and inflammation, and even the occasional ingrown hair! Maintaining decent growth can help you avoid these issues altogether!
And, if you suffer from conditions like asthma, your beard can act as a filter - trapping irritants such as pollen and dust and preventing them from getting into your respiratory system.
Draws attention away from your imperfections
Facial imperfections like acne scars can be a sore spot for many and may make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. Growing a beard and taking the time to keep it well groomed, can help boost your self-confidence, and draws attention away from the imperfections holding you back.
Alternatively, if you’re going for a more rugged look, the combination of skin imperfections and a thick, luscious beard can really work for you.
A well-groomed beard can also create a more balanced and symmetrical facial appearance by adding more definition to the jawline and cheekbones.
Also, leading on from our last point, your beard can act as a layer of protection from irritants that can make conditions such as eczema and rosacea more noticeable.
Provides natural moisturisation
Regularly shaving can strip your skin of its natural oils which leads to dry and flaky skin, causing discomfort and contributing to skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
A beard helps to lock in your skins natural oils, helping to prevent dryness and maintaining healthy skin.
Additionally, a solid beard care routine that involves washing, conditioning and grooming your beard helps to prevent the build-up of dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria.
Less maintenance than regular shaving
It might not feel like it sometimes, but maintaining a healthy beard actually takes less time than shaving every day!
If you shave daily you need to use a razor, shaving cream and aftershave lotion which added up over time is quite time-consuming and costly long term!
A good beard routine requires some daily rituals, but these do not need to take long. While washing and conditioning your beard is recommended - you don't need to do these daily. They can be done at the same time as you wash your head hair and the rest of your body.
